If you are not familiar with the work of Jerry Marzinski then you are missing out on a very important point of view on how to cure schizophrenia. I am not saying he is right. I do not honestly know. But the evidence is very compelling. https://www.jerrymarzinsky.com/post/schizophrenia-what-you-need-to-know

Hey! I've heard of Jerry Marzinski's work but never really explored it. Thanks for sharing! Seems like now's probably a good time to start exploring it...

I've come across this positive approach to schizophrenia and in particular hallucinations before (can't remember where or when though) and I have to say I found it really enlightening and wonderful at the time and still do now. I think the point about the subject's 'attitude' towards the voices is vitally important. If they have a negative attitude towards them they will indeed appear frightening (likewise the attitude of those around them/the community). On the other paw, if they embrace them the demeanour of the voices changes and you can start working together with them.

A very similar thing is true with multiple personality disorder (MPD), in terms of the optimum 'therapy'. it comes from realising that the alters are there to 'protect'. First, you simply acknowledge the other personalities' existence, then you talk to them, then you allow them 'out' now and again (in a safe space) and eventually you either learn to live together or you 'assimilate'. You also get to the stage where you realise you kind of have a bit of a superpower, because the 'alter' can be monitoring things in your peripheral vision which you will not be, thus providing advance warning of danger, for example. Like having eyes in the back of your head.

I think this is similar with the 'voices' - by working with them, you realise that because these voices come from within you, they are able to work things out and tell you about it. They can instantly analyse other people you meet and tell you 'friend or foe'. They can give you insights of varying kinds. In a way, it's about being kind to yourself. And of course this modern western society is anything but kind. (You are damn right about 'anti-psychotics' and western so-called 'medicine').

So what this society perceives as 'mental illness' should, in fact, be perceived as 'mental gifts'.

Furthermore, I have no doubt whatsoever, being a spiritual person, that sometimes these voices (or even alter personalities) are not in fact creations of one's own mind, but genuine 'other' entities/spirits (or, yes, past incarnations) - and if so, the very last thing we should do is reject or ignore or silence them.

Great article and brilliant excerpt. Thank you!
