I’ll be 11 yrs off the spirit sauce myself come March 4th. My 8yr old kid ain’t never seen me drunk. I’m still an asshole. But I’m sane and I’m sober and most days these days I do a pretty darn good job of being an adult human.

Congratulations! That's great. I love the honesty! The truth is that life has its ups and downs whether you drink or not.

Always happy to talk to any other drunk, any time, about anything. Keeps me sane at the very least.

That's something I love about recovering addicts and alcoholics... I don't know Baba from Adam, but I bet you anything that if one of you reading this took him up on the offer, he'd come through. People who have been through recovery are often like that. The recovery community is a beautiful thing.

Other things I’m willing to give up:

Golfing

Voting for communists

Watching soccer (other than maybe the World Cup Final)

Watching NASCAR

I never do those things anyway, but still.

Congratulations!

I’m working on sober year 15 and the growing list of people who’ve never seen you drunk is a big plus!

Such an awful drug. We should have long ago moved on from having to eat rotten fruit to get a buzz. There are much better choices. Life, for example.

Crow - for Lent this year you should give up half the words you use. Seriously. I say this w love and respect. For 40 days try writing posts that are half as long as what you usually write.

lol. duly noted. I'm actually planning to give up use of my laptop for lent. I plan to keep writing by hand... I used to journal like crazy but I've gotten out of the habit completely.

Tobin Owl actually condensed my "What is the Shamanic Trace?" article, which I really appreciated... I guess he thought he was particularly valuable. I've previously said that translation is the sincerest form of flattery for a writer but for a philosopher it's probably just reiterating, refining, and building upon said philosopher's ideas...

You are too defensive in your writing and thinking. So you over-introduce and over-explain. Crow - you are a serious and important thinker and writer. Know this. Stand in this knowing. Then breathe into it. You need not justify yourself or your writing topics. Your shit is truly awesome. All of it. Fiction included. Actually your fiction is tighter. So you already know how to whittle.

Thanks! I appreciate your kind words. And don't worry - I do know it. I know you're not supposed to say this, but I'm my biggest fan.

I won't give up a gods-damned thing for Lent. For one thing, I rejected Christianity as a religion for me many decades ago.

For another, I know myself. If I feel too much craving for alcohol, or if my liver gives me a swift kick, I simply stop drinking for two weeks. No special dates set to honor something I don't believe ever happened are required.

Fair enough. I've been a roll of pissing people off lately, so I'm kinda in a backing-down mood right now. I value readers like you and don't want to piss you off. Could you help me understand what specifically you took offence to? I wrote this piece with my heart in my hand (to borrow a Spanish idiom)... unlike a lot of my writing, this definitely wasn't written with the intention to offend.

Religion...is regarded by the common to be true, by the wise as false and by rulers as useful. -Seneca

Insightful writing from Nevermore!

the decline of religion in the West is correlated with the decline of the West. Do you have an idea about how to teach morality to children without religion? It's a real question.
